The virus will kill our children! Really? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 children under age 15 have died from COVID-19 (if we can believe that number). In a typical year, 190 children die of the flu, 436 from suicide, 625 from homicide, and 4,114 from accidental deaths such as drowning.
According to the Wall Street Journal, in Sweden, which kept schools open, only 20 children under age 19—0.6% of confirmed cases—have been admitted to the ICU for COVID-19, and only one has died.
Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers, says, “Of course! … [I will open up the schools], but how to do it safely. We need the infrastructure and investment to physically distance, stagger classes, provide personal protective equipment and tests, trace and isolate new cases.”
If we’re really concerned about children. we should close the schools down every flu season, because 190 children die of flu in a typical year. Ms. Weingarten declares there is “no way” schools could reopen this fall because of the lack of federal funding. She wants billions of dollars to implement her preferred “safety” procedures.
