It’s tragic when people die prematurely from any cause, be it heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s, asthma, pneumonia, flu, or COVID-19. Now, illnesses and deaths from COVID-19 have special celebrity (with some justification, but not much—flu is just as deadly, and sometimes more so).
The number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 undoubtedly is inflated by the fact that hospitals get $13,000 from the government for each patient admitted for COVID-19, and $39,000 if they’re put on a ventilator. That’s a pretty strong (and perverse) motivation, and some California physicians have reported that they’ve been pressured to write COVID-19 on death certificates, even if the actual cause of death is uncertain.
As I blogged recently, Lord Sumption, a former English Supreme Court Justice, stated that as many as 9 out of 10 fatalities attributed to COVID-19 are actually from other causes such as heart attack, stroke, and cancer.
This inflation of the data is only now starting to be discussed by the mad media mob. And in the next few weeks, you will start to see the mob lament the awful state of the economy.
The destructive, rights-violating laws, regulations, and interventions already are having devastating consequences. I read the shocking statistic today that about 40% of Americans earning less than $40,000 a year have lost their jobs. That is worse than Great Depression-level unemployment.
There are so many victims of this government coercion: 36 million have lost their jobs so far, and there will be more. State and local governments will be firing thousands of people once their tax revenue dries up. More will suffer and die because the government forbade them to seek “non-essential” medical care (e.g., cancer screenings and organ transplants for instance); those who have or will suffer despair or death (e.g., suicides, overdoses, or homelessness) because the government forbade them to leave their homes and engage with people who might have helped them; those who have been and will be physically or sexually abused by parents or spouses because they are forced to stay at home with their abusers; and the countless other victims who have suffered or will suffer consequences of thoughtless government actions. Scientists, doctors, and businessmen have been unable to produce and distribute tests, treatments, medical devices, and other possible solutions to the problem because government prohibits them to think and act in accordance with their own (better) judgment.
I’m pleased to see that The Objective Standard is making strong statements in support of individual rights and freedom. Please join them, me, and other defenders of liberty in speaking out against this indefensible abuse of government power.
